I’m Not a Collector, but I Have Collections

I am not generally a collector the way some people are. We’ve all known collectors of all stripes. Some collect old license plates. Some collect Coco-Cola stuff. Some collect jewelry. On the more serious side, there are some very serious car collectors in the world. And there are some very neat airplane collections.

You might imagine that with my long career as a professional photographer, I would collect cameras, but though I have a lot of cameras and lenses, they have accumulated through the charity of my friends and readers.

Three new old scanners sit on my desk recently.

What I have decided is that I am really starting to like collecting radios, everything from AM/FM radios to old shortwave receivers to police scanners to high-end amateur radio gear.

One odd thing that works in my favor is that a lot of sellers are digging these out of garage sales and estate sales, and don’t really know what they have. Everyone recognizes an old television, but not everyone would know what they found if they came across a de-militarized two-way radio from the Vietnam War.

And often, these older items don’t work, or don’t have much practical value now. A discarded low-band rig out of a highway patrol car, for example, might be fun to fool around with, but you won’t hear much on those lower bands these days.

So keep me in mind of you see something at a yard sale or swap meet that you think I might get kick out of, even if it’s just to get a look t it.

I would also love to hear from you about what you like to collect!

I found this trio of Radio Shack programmable scanners, a Pro-46 and two Pro-91s, on Ebay recently. I don't know if I will actually use them, or just enjoy basking in their radioness.
