Bush, like many people, is unaware that “under God” was added in the 1950s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance#Addition_of_the_words_.22under_God.22 And that “in god we trust” was first added to U.S. coins in 1864, and to bills in 1957: http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml When I was growing up, preachers would refer to these slogans as if they were added by the Founders themselves…
