Why "Sand Animals?"
During our first night of camping in the November cold of the Squaw
Flat Campground in Canyonlands, Jamie, David and I had burned trash,
cardboard boxes and leftover wood from empty campsite's fire pits to
help keep warm. Jamie was particularly cold. We bedded down in our
tent. David and I each had fairly warm sleeping bags, but Jamie had
borrowed hers at the last minute, and it was completely inadequate.
During the night as David got hot, he would get up and pull off an
article of clothing and go back to sleep. The next time he got up, the
sweater or shirt he had shed would be gone, and he would see it on
Jamie. At some point during the night, David and Jamie claim that I sat
bolt upright and said, "Sand animals made of sand! No one gets that
joke!" They say I then went back to sleep. -Richard
