Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle

May 2002

Photos by Richard R. Barron

For many years on my trips out west, I passed big brown signs in the Amarillo, Texas area that directed me in the direction of Palo Duro Canyon. I had been to Chaco Canyon in November of 2001, and was very interested in camping and hiking somewhere close enough to drive in one day. The weather on this particular weekend was absolutely perfect, with cool nights, warm days, and beautiful blue skies. Palo Duro was my last major use of photographic film.

The best hike at Palo Duro is to "The Lighthouse," a handsome hoodoo that serves as the signature icon of the park.
