Meet Our Goats!
Coal and Buxton are pygmy billy goats, born in the spring of 2004. They are friendly, happy and hungry. Pickier eaters than we thought they'd be, they won't touch pears or apples, squash foliage or poke. Their favorite foods include cucumber leaves and tomato vines from the garden, Rose-of-Sharon flowers and leaves, and the leaves from fallen walnut branches. They are always afraid of the lawn mower, and are so curious that they will follow you anywhere to see what you are doing. They live in our back yard, which is large enough that they can graze during the warm months. We also routinely give them clippings from the garden, branches from trees we have pruned (which they rapidly skeletonize), and weeds and flowers from the pasture. In the winter we give them commercial goat feed, which is very inexpensive. Their grazing helps keep the back yard under control, including any areas where they can get their heads through the fence to graze on grasses just outside the fence.
If you live where they are allowed, we definitely recommend these intelligent, affectionate ruminants as pets.
