“This Is My Favorite Assignment So Far!”

With a good working space and excellent monolights with umbrellas, reflectors and softboxes, plus a number of seamless paper backgrounds, the studio space my students and I are using this summer is very luxurious.

One thing I did not have four years ago at the college, nor do I currently have at the vo-tech, is a dedicated studio. When East Central University built their new Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center, they moved several departments into it, including Mass Communications. The facility is one of the nicest in the state university system, and there is enough space that one whole classroom, plus two side rooms, is devoted to studio space for teaching photography. There is also a large black-box theater, a capacious television production studio, and more.

Today we were in the studio for what at least one of the students described as her “favorite assignment so far,” painting with light. It’s always a popular and fun assignment because the results are so striking and it’s easy to create really unusual images.

Darkened studio + three colored flashlights + cooperative models, assistants and fellow photographers = a fun learning experience for all of us.
